The American poet H. W. Longfellow wrote,

“For age is opportunity no less

Than youth itself, though in another dress,

And as the evening twilight fades away

The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day.”

Seeing old age as an opportunity to live life in a way we haven’t been able to before is what will make ageing worthwhile. Today, many people suffer from a fear of ageing. Yet, with a change of attitude and a change in lifestyle, old age can be the best time of one’s life. Here are a few things that will ensure that age for you is just a number and nothing more.

Stay active—Exercise is one of the best anti-ageing tools. With age, muscle tissues become less flexible, and we lose bone density. Start light with exercises, seek the advice of a physician before starting a new exercising regime. Remember, even a brisk walk helps!

A fit mind is a fit body—It is not simply enough to exercise the body, one must exercise the mind too. “Use it or lose it” is really true for our brains. Doing cognitive exercises like puzzles, crosswords, playing chess or other games, reading and learning new things keeps the mind active and creative. So dig up those hobbies and pursue them once more.

Eat healthy—Ourbody absorbs less nutrients when we are older. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables and taking supplements supplies us with the much-needed nutrients. Remember, choosing the right kind of food can help a long way in making us feel young and look young.

Manage your health—Register for regular check-ups, visit a doctor for routine screening such as mammogram, prostate, cholesterol, blood pressure, eye exam, hearing test. Stay on top of your health, don’t give in to it.

Get your beauty sleep—The saying ‘early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise’ really holds true. Sleeping well and on time is extremely essential to maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Meet and greet—Loneliness increases grief and has an adverse effect on health. Join a book club, knitting circle, participate in social activities, learn something new in a group, or even get a pet. Surrounding ourselves with friends, family and those who support us helps create more happy memories and keeps us young at heart.

Value life—Even one day of life can be packed with value. When you wake up in the morning, make a list of things to do. Add structure to your day and add value to everyday activities. Increasing our self-confidence and knowing our self-worth can help us lead fulfilled and happy lives.

Living each day with the notion that the “best is yet to be” will make the journey of ageing a hope-filled one. So, put on your seat belts and get ready. It’ll be one great ride!
